My latest "crack" has been in the form of Google Earth. It's a program which Keystone originally manufactured but Google since acquired it. Basically is a compilation of satellite and aircraft imagery that is gathered in the last three years or so. It's definitely dated because I've zoomed in on some buildings (library at school, Petco Park) that were still under construction. It's free for the average joe. $20 if you want additional features. $400 if you're commercial. It's all on the site. It has some neat features. It can display terrain like mountains, roads, and even 3D buildings of cities! Unfortunately, dialup people will find this useless unless you want to wait about five minutes each time you move around. There is A LOT of imagery and even on this cable connection it can take a while especially if you tilt down. It also requires some muscle under the hood namely your graphics card. It's a real neat time waster. :) You can also learn a lot about your area. In fact, this program showed me of a shortcut home that knocks off two left turn stoplights. Some samples

and it's very important that you not take those turns cause two lefts will not always make one right.
I know, horrible wasn't it? You're allowed to whap me now :)
I use a similar program for which the city that employees me pays for my access. It's really really really cool stuff :) I'm such a nerd sometimes! | |
